The Oxford Brain Gym is a subsidiary of BRAIN SPAN- sensory integration training for all ages Brain Gym ® for Schools
***STOP PRESS 12th August 2008*** Today's provisional figures for SATs results for UK 14-yr olds show a reduction of 2% in reading, down to 69% achieving the Government's target figure of Level 5 or above. That means that more than 30% of children have a problem with reading that interferes with their ability to achieve. Science and English percentages are down, too. How can you help reverse this trend? I suggest that you use my 12 week Brain Gym programme, for which we have research evidence that shows that it improves reading ability for poor readers, giving them better access to synthetic phonics and other systems used by Special Needs Teachers. See below for more information. BRAIN GYM INSET TEACHER TRAINING IN SCHOOLS Simple physical movements and visual exercises which commonly help to make learning and concentration easier, improve reading, writing and memory, and reduce stress (see our exciting new research pages for details). Why might you need Brain Gym help? Official Government figures published in August 2007 showed that 4 out of 10 children leave Primary School with a poor grasp of the 3 Rs, and that about 40% of all children get GCSE grades of D or lower in both English and Maths. Our research shows that Brain Gym movements improve reading and spelling very significantly for many children, at ALL achievement levels not just those with difficulties, helping you towards achieving your school targets. I provide In-Service ( INSET ) training sessions anywhere in the UK for teachers and assistants for all ages of pupils, from nursery to further and higher education institutions. Training is tailored specifically for each school or institution, as your requirements may be for gifted and talented, educational special needs, music, sports or any other specific target or age group. Full, half-day or twilight INSET sessions available. Learn how and why to use Brain Gym in the classroom, and experience the beneficial effects of the exercises for yourself IS BRAIN GYM BASED UPON PSEUDOSCIENCE? NO! Brain Gym was developed by experiment, finding out what actually works in practice with groups of children. It is NOT based upon theories of brain function. Paul Dennison (who developed Brain Gym) confirmed this to me this in person recently. I do NOT use any unsupported claims or incorrect science in my school training, and never have done. I was a research geophysicist for 25 years, and am fully aware of the levels of evidence required! The media are spreading a false message when they claim that Brain Gym is based upon faulty science. Some explanations for how Brain Gym worked were put forward 20 years ago, and these suggestions have not stood the test of time, and some are now known to be wrong. Unfortunately, these suggestions have passed into the folklore of Brain Gym, and are often linked with the system by those who have not been properly trained. Come to me for training, and you will learn how to do the movements properly, how to teach them correctly to your pupils, and how to explain them simply yet without pseudoscience! The media are are also wrong when they say that there is no evidence that Brain Gym works. See my research page for outlines of the current evidence, and my About Brain Gym page for explanations you can use for some of the most popular movements.BRAIN GYM TRAINING FOR TEACHERS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS Our research shows that poor readers in Year 8 have made really significant progress with reading by using a systematic programme of Brain Gym movements for 20 minutes per day for 3 months. One child increased their reading age from just over 6 years to 8 and a half years as a result of the programme! Teachers report improvements in concentration, focus, creativity, use of colour in art work, and increased engagement in school work in general. Our large-scale research project with nearly 1,000 year 4 children is nearing completion, with strong indications of impressive improvements in many areas. We will have to fully analyse all the data before we can make any confident statements, though!
