Synopsis of peer-reviewed article on effects of Brain Gym intervention on reading fluency, auditory and visual memory by Dr Jochen Donczik, 1994 

In an study on reading and language development, Donczik observed that a specific Brain Gym procedure known as Dennison Laterality Repatterning (DLR)  significantly reduced errors in reading fluency, speed of comprehension, and memory performance of eighty-one children considered to have dyslexia. No significant improvements in these areas were seen in 67 children in a control group.

DLR involves a short training period of up to half an hour where the participant learns to control limb movements with arm and leg moving in opposition, together with conscious visual control and auditory stimulus. This is thought to help improve bilateral information processing.

Occular motor (eye-tracking) deficits were selected as a measurement baseline for ease of reading which were validated by an ophthalmologist. 52 out of the 81 experimental subjects were identified as having pronounced eye-tracking deficits with frequent jumps in eye motion.

After experiencing the DLR procedure, Donczik reported a decrease in occular jumps, a significant increase in speed of reading comprehension and improved auditory and visual number memory. The control group results demonstrated that such improvements did not occur without the DLR intervention.
